A prestigious award was made to South African bycatch researcher, Dr Samantha Petersen of WWF-South Africa at the Ninth Meeting of the Conference of Parties to the Bonn Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) in Rome, Italy this week.

The award was made in recognition of her PhD thesis which dealt with bycatch of seabirds, sharks and turtles in southern African waters.

The CMS’ CoP9 is this week considering a resolution on bycatch submitted by Australia which, inter alia, calls for an assessment of the impact of fisheries bycatch on the conservation status of migratory species covered by the Convention.  It is to be noted that all ACAP-listed albatrosses and petrels are also listed on the Convention’s appendices.
