# Feral cats to be removed from New Zealand’s Pitt Island, and its feral pigs controlled

 The New Zealand Department of Conservation has [announced](https://www.doc.govt.nz/news/media-releases/2026-media-releases/$1.7-million-for-chatham-islands-from-doc-community-fund/?utm_id=97757_v0_s00_e0_tv2_a1dennhb94xl6l&fbclid=IwY2xjawTymqdwZG9mAWV4dG4DYWVtAjEwAGJyaWQRMXhDNmxJMFo5QTFxdG43S2JzcnRjBmFwcF9pZBAyMjIwMzkxNzg4MjAwODkyAAEeqjIPRJYFQo_xjL_yZ-WS2I9krgEKJjgV7Lh3EG1KBFyUmnYrll-Mw5qogm0_aem_BYVbNq3RUEE9rFpT9Nvh4w) funding towards eradicating feral cats and controlling feral pigs on [Pitt Island](https://acap.aq/latest-news/acap-breeding-site-no-96-a-single-pair-of-antipodean-albatrosses-breeds-on-new-zealand-s-pitt-island) (Rangihaute/ Rangiauria) in the Chatham Islands.

 The “[Chatham Islands Landscape Restoration Trust](https://www.chathamrestorationtrust.org.nz/) will receive [NZ]$1,169,900 for a project to remove feral cats from Rangihaute Pitt Island.  This will protect at least 14 threatened bird species, including the [Endangered](https://datazone.birdlife.org/species/factsheet/shore-plover-thinornis-novaeseelandiae) Shore Plover *Thinornis novaeseelandiae* (tūturuatu/tchūriwat) and restore several critical ecosystems.”

 “The Chatham Islands Farmers Association will receive [NZ]$543,240 to undertake pig control, reducing the impact on threatened species and critically endangered ecosystems, as well.  This work will begin on Rangihaute Pitt Island before commencing on the main Rēkohu Wharekauri Chatham Island.”

 A [single pair](https://acap.aq/latest-news/acap-breeding-site-no-96-a-single-pair-of-antipodean-albatrosses-breeds-on-new-zealand-s-pitt-island) of [Endangered](https://datazone.birdlife.org/species/factsheet/antipodean-albatross-diomedea-antipodensis) Antipodean Albatrosses *Diomedea antipodensis* breeds on Pitt Island and the [Vulnerable](https://datazone.birdlife.org/species/factsheet/chatham-islands-petrel-pterodroma-axillaris) Chatham Islands Petrel *Pterodroma axillaris* breeds in small numbers protected by a fence.
